RESOLUTION TO SUPPORT THE SAVE THE PEAKS COALITION AND JOIN IN THE EFFORTS TO PROTECT THE SACRED SAN FRANCISCO PEAKS

WHEREAS, [enter the mission or focus of your organization]; and,
WHEREAS, the San Francisco Peaks are a sacred site of the Navajo, Hopi, Zuni, Tewa, Haulapai, Havasupai, Yavapai-Apache, Yavapai-Prescott Apache, Tonto Apache, White Mountain Apache, San Carlos Apache, San Juan Southern Paiute, Fort Mcdowell Mohave Apache and Acoma; and,
WHEREAS, the San Francisco Peaks are religiously and culturally significant to the aforementioned tribes and contain:
-Home of deities,
-Places that are significant in the histories and cultural practices of the aforementioned tribes,
-Places for conducting sacred ceremonies and prayers,
-Places for gathering medicines, minerals and other materials for ceremonial and traditional uses,
-Locations with traditional stories attached to the land; and,
WHEREAS, the San Francisco Peaks comprise a unique ecological area; and,
WHEREAS, the San Francisco Peaks are being designated a traditional cultural property and are eligible to the National Register of Historic Places; and,
WHEREAS, the Coconino National Forest Service has indicated that of 3 alternatives in the Draft Environmental Impact on Arizona Snowbowl Ski Area’s proposed development on the San Francisco Peaks, it prefers Alternative 2 which calls for snowmaking with reclaimed wastewater, a 10 million gallon wastewater storage pond comprising 3.5 acres surface area, a 74 acre clear-cut for ski runs, new ski lifts and further infrastructure expansion of ski facilities including a Native American cultural center; and,
WHEREAS, the proposed development identified as Alternative 2 threatens to destroy federal and public lands resulting in irreversible and irretrievable cultural and spiritual impacts to the San Francisco Peaks; and,
WHEREAS, the Save the Peaks Coalition formed to stop Arizona Snowbowl’s proposed development and protect the San Francisco Peaks for future generations; and,
WHEREAS, [your organization] agrees with and supports the position of the Save the Peaks Coalition; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT, [your organization] will uphold the position of the Save the Peaks Coalition,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, [your organization] joins the Save the Peaks Coalition in its fight to stop Arizona Snow bowl from further development on the sacred San Francisco Peaks by opposing Alternative 2 in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement and brings its resources to the campaign.
